  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi, I've just read Touie's "Amy update" post. With Flint still not eating (now syringe feeding), the vet has suggested he comes off the baytril. He had his Op to remove abscess on Tuesday morning. He's pleased with Flint's stitches etc, just not with the not eating. He hasn't mentioned any other antibiotics to be used. Should I suggest something? Is it too soon for him to be medication free?

Also how often & how much should I syringe feed?

They asked me if there were any questions & I said no, then thought of millions as soon as I came on here. He was at the vets this morning & I have an appointment at 7 tonight

Hiya. Is flint having any pain relief?? If not he may not be eating cos of pain rather than cos of the antibiotics. A course of ANY antibiotic should be for a MINIMUM of 5 days, preferably 7. Otherwise antibiotic resistance can occur. All the toing and froing to the Vets will also be stressful for Flint, another reason for not eating. Would your Vet allow you to medicate him via injection. Antibiotics given this way are less likely to upset the guts. With the syringe feeding you need to aim for about 10-20ml every couple of hours depending on the size of Bunny. Hope he feels better soon. Jane and Buns xx

He had a pain relief jab last night & the vet said that could last up to 24 hours. Will ask at vets if I can inject him myself, with antibiotics. He did mention this morning that if he didn't start eating he could give him an injection that might help him get his appetite, so will ask for that aswell.

I did ask about getting a call-out vet & they said that they will do that no probs as i'm near the surgery, but it'll be £50 a time!! If he needs a vet this weekend, will do that instead.(I'm a panicker!)

Also, sounds like I'm not syringe feeding him enough. So syringe-feed more, drive him about less. & lots of jabs. Got it. Thanks!
