Please Note - Medical Advice
Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.
You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.
We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.
Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.
Yes it is BUT if it is not working a Vet can prescribe off-licence. Could your vet consult with Bristol Rabbit Clinic at Bristol Zoo?? Or you could offer to sign a disclaimer so Vet knows he/she wont be sued for prescribing off-licence. You might want to print this info' off for your Vet.touie said:I'll suggest it, her wound looked really good a few days ago She has completed the whole bottle of the baytril that the vet gave me I discovered she would have it much more easily if she knew a treat was coming afterwards! I'll mention the other to the vet though I've a feeling that my vet will be reluctant to use anything other than Baytril as she's already told me that it's the only antibiotic licensed for rabbits
The Baytril may be containing the infection but from what I have come to understand it seldom cures the infection entirely and re-abscessation is common. Some Vets acually use both Baytril and Septrin at the same time in severe cases. Sounds like your Vet might be a bit nervous of prescribing for Bunnies so he/she might feel better for talking with a Vet who has more experience with them. You might have to put that 'tactfully' though!!  Jane and Buns xxtouie said:yes thats a good idea I'll mention that thanks! If the Baytril was working would that have stopped it getting infected completely then? Her genitals (touch wood) which was the bit that the vet was really worried about look good!
