Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

carpet and sore hocks....?

Jack is a house bunny who is on carpet all the time and I read somewhere that running about on carpet all the time can cause sore hocks. Is this right and if so is there anything I can do about it?

Buddy used to have bald hocks and get dry patches from racing on carpet. (I assume this was the cause) and i used to rub sore paws in to them. they never got "sore" but it meant i was keeping a check on them to ensure they didnt. he also had vet bed in his cage and i made sure his litter tray was emptied at least daily as he liked sitting in there.

I had a problem with this.

We are renting at the moment and unfortunately the carpets are synthetic, and that caused the problem. We now have cotton rugs on the floor and vetbed in the cages and the problem is gone, I still have to check them quite often though.

When it was bad I was changing their litter trays 3 times a day  , thankfully it's back to once a day again! :D

We used to have a carpet in our sitting room but had to get rid of it - no, not because it was causing Binky any type of disease, but because he was eating it.

Thanks for the advice, I didn't really know anything about sore hocks. Had a look at Jack and he doesn't have a problem at the moment - can't wait until spring though when he can go out in the garden all day which will be much better for him!
