  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

What causes Abscesses?

Wise Old Thumper
On Friday night, I was sitting on the settee with Flint asleep on my knee & I felt a lump on his side - just in front of his back leg. It was only really small, but hard. On Saturday I checked him over again it was definitely bigger. I took him to the vets & it turns out it's an abscess. It burst & left a hole (which the vet seemed happy with, but GROSS!). I've been instructed to wash it with salt water, which I've been doing a couple of times a day. I've also put vitamins in his water. And I've put him in a different hutch as I'm not sure what's caused it. He isn't bonded yet (waiting for Polly to get spayed in a couple of weeks) & it's a weird place to get a cut. The vet said he only needs to go back if he gets worse, but I've got two having VHD jabs tonight, so Flint's coming too!

Any ideas what's caused this?

bites in particular have a tendancy to abscess. if infection does develop in the wound the skin has often healed over, meaning that any pus is unable to drain. hence you get the lump.

Every rabbit will lick a wound and they carry the bacteria in there mouths that will infect the wound. You need to get it sorted very quickly as the pus can travel through the blood and the bones if left. val

It was pus-free (& open) Sunday, but had developed into another lump Monday. He had to have an operation to have it removed yesterday & is recovering now :)

He's going in for a check up on Friday. AND - my new vet is giving me a bulk discount as I have 10(ish) bunnies :D
