Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

my male rabbit

New Kit
hi i got a male rabbit who is living on his own at the moment he is probably about 8-9 months old, i would like to get him a friend he has lived with a rabbit before hen he lived somewhere else but when i got him his friend had been sold and left him on his own. i think he would benefit from having a friend as he is always going up to the guinea pig hutch when he is out to see them. just want to know what is the best way of getting him a friend, i would like to go to a rescue but what sexes should i get? obviously not a female as i know what will happen and im not cut out for that and there are far too many rabbits needing rescued

The best option would be to have your male neutered, and after the 6 week waiting period (in which he'd still be able to make babies!), pair him with a girly. Or if you went for a spayed female from a rescue you could introduce them after the cooling down period of 4 weeks (otherwise your male may still be a little frisky and annoy the female by trying to mount her!)
If you do a search on the forum for 'bonding' you'll find lots of helpful advice! It's also worth finding rescues local to you and contacting them as well.
Either way you'd need him neutered - two unneutered males will almost definately fight, and an unneutered male would pester a female too much, even if she was spayed.

I agree with Karly's comments! I don't think rescues rehome rabbits that aren't spayed already so I wouldn't worry about babies :)
I think it's quite hard to bond two male bunnies and a boy/girl combination works much better. If you were to bond two males you would definately need to have them castrated as they would fight. :D

thankyou for the advice i will look into having him neutered then will go to a rescue to get a female, that sounds the best way,

Kelly where abouts are you as some rescues will provide a dating service? Also the price of neutering varies from vet to vet. If you say where abouts you are someone on here may be able to advise you further :D

im in suffolk, i know of some rescues around me as im looking to get more guinea pigs too but thought as my rabbit is on his lonesome at the moment will concentrate on getting him a friend

Just a word of caution re females from rescue centres. Please make absolutely sure that the female is neutered as we got a pair of buns from the blue cross and were told that the doe was neutered only to be told two months down the line that "no she isn't neutered and we don't neuter any female bun's as it is too costly and risky"

So please make absolutely sure! Luckily our male was done so there were no problems and we have since had Fern neutered.
