  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Steam chamber?

My bunny is going into the vets tomorrow to go in a steam chamber. She has had pneumonia for a week now and is slowly getting better (even though they didnt think she would) has anyone else come across a steam chamber before? I dont want her to go in it if it will distress her. The aim of it is to clear her nose. Any thoughts would be appreciated x

I haven't heard of a steam chamber but I've heard putting them in the bathroom when you have a hot steamy bath recommended and also drapping a towel over the cage and a bowl of steaming water. I guess a steam chamber is just a posher version :)

I think it's bound to distress her - isn't there another way of clearing her nose? If she's on antibiotics and is being nursed indoors, has stuff like olbas oil and vicks around to help her breathe, and is recovering then I would be inclined to carry on treating her as she is. I know if they are critical with pneumonia a nebuliser can save their life, but that's got drugs in rather than steam - and she doesn't sound critical?

you can take her in to your bathroom in a pet carrier/cage and have a hot shower - the steam will help with the congestion or put some Oibas oil on a tissue by her hutch?!
