  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

sore hocks?

i have just noticed than on the back of joeys back feet, there are small red patches with no fur on them. they dont seem to be hurting him because he is running around as usual.

do you think it could be sore hocks?

and does anyone have a photo of a sore hock so I can see what they look like??

Rex has these too (my mini rex). They seemed redder than usual when I housed them on a sort of dog/picnic blanket thing so I took it out and now stick to less abrasive bedding like newspaper, puppy training pads (as the buns in that cage have no incisors to chew it up!) or Vetbed.
I think once it develops into scabs and sores that you have a real problem, so it's definately worth keeping an eye on it and doing your best to ensure it doesn't - soft bedding, don't allow him out on surfaces that aggravate it (varies from bun to bun, some are OK on concrete, some only on grass, some need Vetbed everywhere, etc.) and ensure he's never left on damp bedding/puddles of urine more than necessary (change to a more absorbant litter if needs be, invest in some Vetbed and/or wooden pellets rather than a less absorbant litter like newspaper or shavings, etc.)

Squidgy had sore hocks, and we were told that it was probably running around on carpet that didi it, as it is quite rough. He now has coton throws in his hutch and in his area in the house, and we use the wooden pellet litter.
