Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

bonding post neutering

I'm planning on adopting a spayed doe to keep my rabbit [Earnest] company.

First though Earnest has to be neutured. I know he'll still be fertile for around 6 weeks but as the doe will be neutered babies won't be a problem

So how long should I wait til I adopt? Are bucks still horny in this six week period? I don't want him hasseling his new friend. maybe I should just wait i until he stops circling us!!

I've been sussing out the rabbits at the local shelter and am impatient - They're so cute.

Though maybe I should hold out since after that there will be no more new bunny additions for a long long time.

It takes a few months for the hormones to go down, even when they're not fertile, however the mounting is more to do with dominance so it's their respective personalities that will make or break the pairing.

When he's stopped circling would be a good idea, but preferably take him to choose a girl at the rescue - it's a neutral place for him, and trying to make a bonding work at home, when they don't like each other isn't much fun.

good luck :)
