  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

VHD Vaccination

Rosie had her first VHD vac three weeks ago and I noticed that for a few days she was very quiet and not her usual bouncy self but it passed.

Yesterday Leo had his and he seems to be quiet tonight too just like Rosie was before. Is this a common thing?

Yes, buns can be a bit 'off colour' 24-48 hours after the VHD Vaccination. As long as your Buns continue to eat/poop then there is no need to worry. The VHD vaccine can also cause a local skin reaction at the sight of vaccination. I would just inform your Vet of any reaction noticed. I am sure your Bun will be fine. If you have ever had a 'flu jab you may know that it can make you feel a bit 'grim' for a couple of days. It is just the same with VHD vaccine. It causes an immune response in your bun which can make them feel a bit off colour. Jane and Buns xx

I think some buns do feel a bit off after a VHD jab, but not about 3 weeks after. I would take them to the vet for a check if it continues, just to be safe.

It sometimes makes them lame for a couple of days too, for some unknown reason - but they soon recover :)
