How long do giants live?

BlackCat

Warren Scout
I've heard all sorts of things about how long they live. Some people are adamant that they only live for a few years but others have told me that they have the same life expectancy as any other breed. I was just wondering, because whilst sorting out my records I realised that my British Giant girl is nearly 4 now.
Cheers.

 I heard this too, but of course there are exceptions :D are frenchies classed as giants or large breeds? just curious as I have a frenchie

I personally think anything around the 10lb mark counts as a giant really.

I had suspected that this rumour might be true - they are so far removed from what they should naturally be!

Its true they very often do die much sooner, the stress on vital organs sees to that , but there are some that dispite this do live to a normal age. You can only hope yours will do well and live a long life. Some do only make it to 4. val

How heavy would you say a full grown frenchie would be? my little guy is only 5 months, so has a bit of growing to do yet, so far he's only around 3kg

But life is about QUALITY as much as quantity. I am sure you are giving your big bun a lovely life and that is what matters. Jane and Buns xx

The minimum is 10lb for frenches, usualy about 12 is average, but it depends how big his parents were. Some breeders breed them a lot bigger. val

Hiya we have had four huge French Lops all reach 12 years young, and one made 13 :)
They had a strict hay (mainly ) diet all their lives so never got overweight, and had access to a huge run/ garden all day, so we always moving about and exercising.
They all seemed to have a taste for cold Tea  :!: perhaps this is what gave them longlevity :?:

Wow! sounds good, 12 years is amazing for any rabbit but espeacially so for big buns. I always worry about diet. My last rabbit bilbo was 5kg and slightly over weight, but a big bunny all the same. He ate ALL the wrong foods and had dental problems  he still managed to live over 9 years some how. I think he was an exception, I didn't know about a lot of the things I know now, most bunnies probably wouldn't have been so lucky. He ate russel rabiit and just picked out the bits he liked, he had treats all the time, buiscuits  he wouldn't eat hay. I feel like such a bad bunny Mum when I think about him!.
Now I know better my bunnies get science selective and lots of hay durung the day along with dried grass. They have veggies at night. For treats I avoid all the pets shop treats ( apart from eccel nature snaks) they get whole meal toast and some times half a dry weatabix each or shreadded wheat. They are free range and enjoy running around my room.
Cold tea sounds good! is this just normal every day tea?( obviously without sugar or milk?) I'm always looking for new healthy things for my bunnies :D

12 is an awesome age! :D

I thought I better ask in case I needed to keep more of an eye on her. She has become much more lazy recently - she lives with another giant and they have constant access to a run. Her mate Frank (age 2 1/2) is usually chewing/digging/binyking but Thumbelina has taken to sleeping a lot. I can't pick her up at the moment due to being injured (it's hard to pick up even a small bunny form floor height!) so it's harder to keep an eye on her weight.

Mind you, she always has been pretty lazy  if I let her out to run around the garden she does one lap (to select the comfiest place with grass in reach ) then lays down and has a nibble
