  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

what are your essentials??

can you all give me a list of what you consider to be essential items for keeping rabbits? As I am beginning to buy my stuff now it'd be good to know what I really need and whats just a gimmick...

Today I made a start and bought a water bottle and some plastic plant pots for play  As you probably know by now Dad is building my hutch and run and I've located a good carrier. I know I also need food bowl(s) and some more toys, bedding, food etc
What else?? Over to you! Even if it seems really obvious to you, let me know :D

Hay
pellet food,
straw for bedding
wood shavings or whatever you are to use on the bottom of the hutch
cat trays good for beds and litter trays
nail clippers
comb

I don't actually use much... or what I use is stuff we having lying around anyway

A litter tray is handy even with a hutch as it makes cleaning out soooo much easier. Make sure you measure right though so it fits!

Other than that:

Water bottle (a spare is a good idea they always break just after the shops close)
Food bowl
Cat carrier
Flea Comb (unless you're planning on angoras that will cover all your grooming)
Nail clippers (unless your going to get a vet to do it)
Scrapper (like for cat litters trays) they're good for cleaning out
dustpan (I use scrapper and dustpan rather than a brush)

Erm, other than toys I think that's it :)

Good toys are the cardboard tubes inside kitchen towels/loo rolls!! Also bunnies just love a cardbord box to hide in/TRASH!!  . Locating a good supply of hay is essential. Can you have a word with any crofters up there in Orkney and ask them where you might get some decent hay :? :? A safe disinfectant for hutch cleaning will also be needed. Also a dust pan and brush for cleaning out. Going back to rabbit toys you could spend a small fortune on the 'commercial ones' but in my experience bunnies are just as happy with an old telephone directory which they can rip to shreads   as they are with a toy you actually buy. Bunnies also enjoy a variety when it comes to toys so if the toys cost nothing they can have a different one every day and it doesn't matter if they destroy it!! :D :D Jane and Buns xx

I am a podiatrist and I have some pretty heavy duty nail clippers, do you think I could use them on rabbits too?? :)
Oh, and I'm in the process of tracking down a farmer to supply me with hay hopefully... :)

apart from food etc - a dustpan and brush - I'm now a conniseur of dustpan and brushes

I broke so many cat litter scoops I now use the dustpan as a scoop to clean the dirty litter out, and a garden weeding tool - like a little metal knife in an L shape (from Wilkinsons, where else?) - the L gets into the corners great :)

and also from Wilkinsons, my fleecy pet mats - cheaper than vet bed and perfect for the shed floor for the 4 girls to snuggle on - added bonus being it grooms them for me (can't get near them, never mind brush them) - When I brush it off at the end of the garden, it's like a snowstorm - then just wash and dry it on the delicates cycle.

Also from erm...that shop  little flat carpets for 80p each - just chuck them when they get too dirty, and brush them in between - great for rabbits that don't chew - only lasted a day with Benny

Don't buy cat litter trays either - they're so small they pee over the sides - underbed storage boxes from WILKINSONS  have higher sides.

Also if your getting hay from a farm be careful theres not myxi in the area as the farm hay isnt sterilised just a thought.
I get earthenware dishes as they cant be chewed and dont tip easily, water bottles, woodern chewy things on a scewer, willow balls you get form p@h,rabbit nuggets, think thats about it :D
