Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Syringe feeding Benjy

Tiggerwoo

New Kit
I took my bun in to be neutered this morning and at the mo am concerned. He has pooed luckily and had a bit of syringe food and grass the vet at about 3pm, and came home about half 5. It is now half 11 and with the exception of about 2 small mouthfuls of carrot... I have tried tempting him out with carrot, kale, sprouts, broccoli, his normal excel pelets and hay and he just won't eat. I am going to take him straight down to the vets in the morning if he hasn't eaten, but have just prepared a gooey mess... Boiled some water and melted aload of his excel in it, but am not sure how much to syringe feed him when it cools down as I don't want to waterlog him and also how to do it, as have only used syringes externally on my pets before. Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance

Ideally you should be getting 20ml into your buns.

If he doesn't like being picked up the best thing to do is wrap him in a towel so he can't kick or scratch and then feed him

Thanks for all your concern. Sorry its taken so long to reply. The battery or power supply on my laptop is knackered and PC keeps switching off!

Benjy is back to his normal mad self, eating and playing football and after a long session in goal this afternoon is fast asleep on the sofa at the mo........ Little does he know he's off to the vet shortly for his post-op check up! He's had such a lot to go through in his short life. We rescued him on Christmas Day after a load of bunnies were turned out on to a golf course a couple of days just before Christmas!

I took him to the vet the morning after I posted about him not eating and after being given a gut stimulant and pain killing injection I spent the rest of the day syringe feeding him. By the evening he was eating veg and hay and the next day was back on his pellets too. I think he got sick of me sticking a syringe in his mouth.

Once again thanks for the tips. At least the op was worth it because soon I'll be able to get a girlfriend for him!
