  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Correct weight for buns

Jacob is on a diet and lost weight today for first time!!! The vet nurse is so chuffed..so am I!! Clever Jacob!

The vet nurse gave me a guide to weight by Burgess.

Dutch 2-2.3kg

Dwarf Lop 2-2.4kg

English 2.7-3.6kg

Lionhead 1.4-1.7kg

Mini Lop 1.5-1.7kg

Netherland Dwarf 0.9-1.1 kg

In fact the vet nurse says that Jacob, though a Dutch should try to get to 2.5kg, so a little heavier than above. Hope that helps..by the way Jacob is 3.19 (! I am ashamed, he did get to 3.25kg) but I am trying really hard and he's gone from 3.25 to 3.19 so getting there at last!

The trouble is bunnies vary even within a breed so a small dutch would be overweight at highend of the scale of dutch rabbit weights. A few 100g's is a lot in bunny terms. If you're worried about weight the vet should be able to give you an ideal weight specific for your bun like Jacob has :)

thanks. Holly is 2k - i thought she looked tubby and the vet said she needs to loose a little more before she gets sprayed.

He can alwready feel loose skin where she was bigger before and lost weight.

You also have to be careful with Netherlands and "Mini" lops - a lot of the pets out there are very big for the breed and the maximum breed weight would be unhealthily skinny!
