Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

poor Tia - nail cutting!

When Angie got Tia a few months ago, she was a case of neglect - they'd never cut her nails and she couldn't walk properly

So they're still a bit on the long side now - and I was going to take her to the vets but decided it would be an ongoing thing, and not worth stressing her over...But how do you pick up a rabbit? No-one ever showed me

Anyway - I grabbed her somehow and boy did she put up a fight, poor girly - so much for building up trust  Thank goodness she's a tiny nethie!

Her nails look fine now, although I didn't want to cut too much off, but I was horrified to find that one of them was so loose it just snapped off at the root - eek, blood all over!

I guess this is because they got weak in her original home? - Will it grow back or is it gone for good now? Poor babe has recovered enough to eat some SS and pee on the carpet in defiance - I think she'll live, but she won't come near me again for a while - Especially as I'm doing it again next Sunday till they are short :(

Aww, nail clipping is a little tramatic (for owner as well as bunny) but it does get easier with practice :)

Yes, I imagine having over grown nails probably put pressure in the nail beds and that's why it broke so easily. It will grow back though :)

There are some instructions are phtos here on how to pick up: http://www.rabbitrehome.org.uk/care/handling.asp

One hand under the chest and the other hand under the bum.

If a bun has objections to being picked up then trying it can result it a sort of rolled up kicking bunny. If that's the case you might find it easier to drop a towel over her head first then bundle her up tight in that before lifting her. Or just poke her bum into a cat carrier and lift her in that to whereever your clipping.

thanks Tam - 'rolled up kicking bunny' is a good description of what Tia was

I sat on the floor outside her crate, so at least it was over quickly and I didn't have to carry her - I guess I'm a bit nervous since Tia bit me a few weeks ago...I wore a gardening glove on my left hand to hold her, and a very thick fleece - didn't want a bite on my chest

the nail should grow back. Last august daisy (charliesangel's daisy) snapped off a nail and it is just now starting to grow back. As long as she isn't bleeding she will be fine.

.

Oh Edana poor Tia ...and you! One bun I had in a while ago, Merlin, had nails so overgrown they came away fromt he roots :( Will have to ask his new owner...Animusak AKA Katie...if they've grown back...

thanks for the info - she seems fine now - not bleeding and I gave her a clean litter tray so hopefully it won't get infected - She's been sat on the carpet all day anyway...I think she's forgiven me now I've given her some carrot :)
