Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

sore hocks

madysmummy

Mama Doe
found out yesterday mady has tiny sore hocks :(
bought some antiseptic wash and shall see how that goes. they are very small but is there anything else I could do. i'm sure its cos shes a house bunny on carpet all day

Hiya. Is the skin actually broken or is it just that all the fur has worn off?? Sore hocks are a bit of a pig to treat once they occur but you can minimise the severity. Firstly it is advisable to have your bunny on a surface that isn't too abrasive. Also it is important to make sure bun is not over-weight. If her hocks look very raw you can use some HAEMORRHOID CREAM   on them for a few days. This will have an antibacterial/anaesthetic effect. If the skin is broken then it may be a good idea to get your Vet to check your bun. It may be necessary to prescribe systemic antibiotics as if infection gets into the hock serious tendon damage can occur. Your Vet/Vet Nurse may also be able to show you how to apply some anti-pressure dressings (a bit like a 'corn plaster') during the acute phase of the condition.Jane and Buns xx

I was just sitting with my bunny on the sofa, I know his hocks where bald as the lady from the rabbit rescue said they where. But I noticed that they where looking red, he's not looking dis-stressed or anything. Should I be doing something to help?

well its just a tiny little circle on each heel. one is slighty worse than the other, a little red. Will see how it goes. i have heard to put vasaline on them  :?: will see how they go, she doesn't seem to be in any pain at the moment. Was quite a shock when i found them though. :(
