  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I bought a bag of SS for Smudge today, and put a few pellets in his bowl with his other food. He immediately picked out the SS, and won't touch anything else. We have just had to move the bag as he isnicking it out of the bag. He obviously loves it, but I do know that he has to be weaned onto it and I am concerned he wont be getting much to eat if he is just picking out the few pellets I give him.
Can anyone recommend anything?

( His check at the vets all went well.)

I have put 6 of my new rabbits straight onto science selective, as the rescues forgot to give me any of their mix - None had the slightest problem and they all went mad for it! It contains a probiotic, so maybe that helped settle their tums.

Ok Thanks for that Elve. I was just a bit concerned cos I have read in numerous places that they should be weaned onto it.
The little mite is going nuts for it.

 as long as he has plenty of hay, he won't starve despite what he may tell you :D Feed the graduallly increasing amounts per day and it doesn't really matter if he eats the other pellets to or not he'll top up on the difference in hay.

Elve - it's probably all the hay they eat :) If they don't have many pellets then there isn't really much difference between giving them a few new and old to just giving them a few new.
