  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Mites!

Phill

Wise Old Thumper
Oakley we think has Cheylatiella (sp) mites. there little mites which look like peices of walking dandruff  Yuck! They cause small areas of raised red and sore skin and the hair comes out in small chunks with the skin attached at the bottom. Im taking her to see Hazel tonight and she will go on a course of ivomec, i think. Has anyone ever had a bun with this kind of mite before and do you know of anything which could cool oakleys skin??

I've experienced this type of mite before with my rabbits. The ivomec is super, and kills them within a week (treatment is usually at least 10 days..to kill the entire cycle of mites).
I didn't tend to put any thing else on the area. Just left the ivomec to work its magic :) It's excellent stuff and will clear up any probs really quick :)

Thanks Veronica i've never had to have any of the buns of Ivomec before just the Rats and it was brilliant for there mites. It's just that her skin in the areas affected is very red and she keeps trying to lick it but can't get there as it's on the back of her neck.

ew ew ew. poor little thing. hope it clears up soon!

well spotted phil! they are lucky having you as a mummy.

Thanks Desdi and Alfie, the ivomec should clear it it did with the rats last year. I just can't bare the scratching she's doing as she's just making her skin worse.

Heidi my Giant has it at the moment and is going for her ivomec injection tomorrow. joys of rabbits
