  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Crusty Eye

Floppy's eye is crusty around the edges and also a little red around the eye, its only one eye but shes also been sneezing for ages but not really any discharge, the vet did check her chest but since then she has developed the eye problem - any ideas?

If it hasn't cleared up after a day or so, it sounds like you might need to get some antibiotic eye drops from the vet. It could be related to the sneezing but it's also possible there's a different cause - she could have scratched her eye or have conjunctivitis. These clear up quite quickly with treatment.

It could also be another symptom of her snuffles, I have a snuffly bun who often sneezes, he's on antibiotics on and off, one of the things my vet always asks is has he had runny eyes... I think it can be an indication that they're getting more sick, it may be time for another course of antibiotics or a higher dose/ different type if she's already on them - I'd definitely ask your vet for some advice.

Runny eyes and sneezing can also be indications of teeth problems, or allergies.

When my old rabbit Bilbo had eye problems, it usually meant teeth problems. His back teeth irritated his tear duct. some times it was red, other times it was runny. Or she dcould have had something irritate her eye, or it could be an infection. she might need eye drops or antibiotics. I would get her to the vet for a complete check up incase it gets worse.

Hi i posted that last night on behalf of my friend whos making me really really angry at the moment as she can clearly see something is wrong but wont take the poor bun to the vets until after the 28th when she gets paid

Thanks for the info ill pass it on to her it may prompt her to get bunny to the vets sooner rather than later
