  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

These are quite good pieces of information which may help you.

It is often easier the first time to get someone to help you in person to do it, some people get either the vet nurse or the vet to run through it with them as they are doing it. If you are anywhere near a rescue, most of them will help you, if you are near me and free during the weektime give me a shout. There is also Greenfields in Bracknell I am sure Lorna would be happy to go through this with you as well.

The nurse at my vets cut mine at £6.00 each a trip and they usually need
doing every six months as mine are free range.

Iv been lucky i rang Emma from rescue where i got the bunnys from and she cut them for me and showed me what to do,so Im feeling a little better now,lol

WHy bother book an appt. w/ a vet for this? I just do a little bit (1 mm) at a time, guarantee that little bit can't go wrong. And do it once every 3 week.

I just take a couple of mm off each time too, was a bit scary at first but i've never hurt the bunnies doing it!

We wrap Jetty upside down in a towel and do them that way, the only problem is with him being a black bunny I can never see where the pink bits are on his nails. Though I would rather trim Jetty's nails than our pensioner Canary Lui's claws before he passed away.
