Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

vac and neuter questions

i was thinking of booking Stumpy in for his VHD vac for tuesday(depending on what is happening with my poorly rattie  )

if he were to have his vac on tuesday-would next friday be too soon to have him neutered?

i was also wondering, how long after being neutered does the spraying stop?

If I were you I would leave it at least a fortnight between vaccination and neutering. As for the spraying it can take a few weeks to settle down. Jane and Buns xx

is there a reason why you think it would be best to leave it 2 weeks between? the thought of another 5 weeks or so of spraying is quite scarey   but if necassary then shall be done!

we were told by vet no prob in op just after vaccs . but only bun we have lost under anesthetic had had myxi vac same week .
now we never vacc and neuter so close together .

I guess after a vaccine, the buns body is in a heightened state of alert, and its immune system is working to produce antibodies, so in essence you are operating on a bunny that is not 100% 'well'. Also, the fact that the immune response is operating in response to the vaccine means that it might struggle to also cope with any bacteria etc which get into the wound during or after the operation - it would be hard to keep any wound totally sterile. So although in most cases it would probably be ok, I think it would be sensible to leave a couple of weeks gap as a precaution. [/code]

storm had his Myxi jab on the friday and was neutered on the monday, thankfully with no problems. I didn't know there could be a risk!

if there is a risk then i shall leave the gap. i see what you mean Alison-i suppose it is a bit risky if their immune system is already trying to do one thing!

to be honest, in my experience, if there is any problem with vaccination it shows up within 24-48hrs. I know that bunnies arent neonates, but the vaccincation principles are the same. We often have babies who need treatment of one sort or another, and having had vaccinations is not a contraindication. Once the body has begun to produce the antibodies (ie that 24-48hrs) then the body is under no more stress than usual.

ARC tend to leave some time between getting rabbits in and getting them neutered and vaccinated. A change of home enviroment and visits to the vet and an operation are all very stressful for rabbits which could result in many different problems if they all happen at once. This is why we wait in between each before the next appointment for them to recover and chill out. Our theory is a less stressed bun is more likely to start eating normally earlier, have a lower heart rate which can cause problems if the rabbit has any heart condition (diagnosed or not), is more susceptible to infections such as pasteurella if their immune system is compromised etc.

Obviously owned rabbits are slightly different as they have not got the additional burden of a new enviroment or owners to contend with. Even so I would be inclined to wait two weeks between each to allow them to build themselves up.

I had my three neutered and spayed and they all had their VHD vaccination the same day as the operation. They were all fine! I was going to do this when having Dexter neutered but I think I will have the vaccination done at a different time now.

just to let you all know Stumpy had his VHD vac on Tuesday, the vet agreed to leaving about 2 weeks before getting him neutered so will book him in in a couple of weeks!

she nearly bunny napped him though-said she could play with him for hours  i had to watch when i was taking Gabriel up too, my vet lurves the bunnies :D

Glad to hear Stumpy`s still doing well and continuing to steal everyones hearts!
Bet you can`t wait til he`s neutered and you stop getting a wet forehead!!!!
