  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Young Bun
Ive just been out to tuck all my buns in for the night except Gypsy, she has the run of the enclosure at night(its very safe and fully enclosed). Normally shes pushing at her hutch door to come out but not today, shes not eaten her food i put in this morn and shes just hunched up in the far end of her hutch, she even let me pick her up which is not like her. The trouble is i cant get her to a vet till tomorrow as i dont drive and my o h is at work. Is there anything i can give her that might help, im really worried. DEB

Hi Deb, are there any poops and wees in her toilet area??
The trouble is she will not poo or pee in her hutch even when shes there all day, so as soon as i let her out at tea time she goes to the tray in the enclosure and does her poos and pee, so ive just lifted her out of her hutch and let her run round and hope to see her use the tray but after 15 mins she hadnt move out of one corner. so the last time i know of that shes peed is breakfast time.

Im no expert but she NEEDS to eat ASAP have you tried tempting her with all of her favourie treats etc? she needs to drink too - i would ring the vets if i was you ASAP and get her there any way you can

Just been and tryed her with her favourite food but not interested, i really can not get to a vets ive no transport and both my kids are out at clubs one due back at 5 15 the other 5 45 so i have to be here when they come home.

have you got any syringes in to syringe feed bun some water? Or some pineapple juice (diluted) :?:

can your vet come to you? i dont know if they all do but ours does in an emergency they do charge of course though - you do need to get some liquid into her thought with a syringe ... im sure someone can give you more advice than i can

Have you got any probiotics or avipro? As you really need to keep her gut moving. Failing that if you`ve got any bio-yoghurt try syringe feeding her that and then water aswell, so she`s getting fluid and something else to try and keep her gut moving.
If at all possible i would try and contact your vet as once buns stop eating you have to be so careful.

Let us know how she gets on.

Could a neighbour wait for your children to come home? Or how about another neighbour taking you to the vets? This bun really does need to see a vet asap - sending lots of healing vibes to her.

Well have got a syringe a tryed giving her water with that but its harder then i thought shes really fighting me, and i dont want to stress her. ( brought her indoors in carry box now.)

sit her on the floor in front of you, with her back to you, one hand hold her face the other put the syringe in just to the side of her front teeth. If her guts not working it really is very serious and can't wait till the morning!!!

they all try to fight with you when you force feed w/ syringe. I have that experience w/ past rabbits. Just put a towel around him, wrap it tight so he won't kick you, and hold the syringe in your other hand and give him some water.

Another thing I do is to put the bunny's feet under the table while I hold him sitting on my desk, that way, I just have to deal with his front paws and can easily insert the syringe.

Make sure the water doesn't get into the lung, to avoid that, just insert 1 cc. at a time with a 5 second pause.

You can force feed baby food as well, Heat up a glass of hot water, insert the syringe w/ the baby food sucked in, let the hot water warms up the baby food, and insert 1 cc. at a time to the bunny

I would try to find some way of getting your Bun to a Vet TONIGHT. Could you ask a neighbour to take you once your children are home. Or you could perhaps get a taxi (I know they can be expensive but your Bun really needs treatment TONIGHT). From what you are describing your Bun is in pain and without appropriate Veterinary care the prognosis could be poor. I am not trying to scare you and I really do understand how lack of transport/family responsibilities have to be taken into account. But some-how your Bun needs Veterinary treatment TONIGHT. Do please keep us posted as to how you get on. I am sure you must be very worried. Jane and Buns xx

book an appointment first, find a vet that is a rabbit specialist.

Keep him under observation, for e.g., in your room with a blanket to wrap around him or use heating pad if necessary, use your judgement.
