Choking bunny! UPDATE!

Leanne

Wise Old Thumper
Hey all,

Don't know if u remember but I posted a while ago about my bun lovage choking & hiccupping for days after.

Anyway it just happened again!!(she's on my lap recovering)
This is the 3rd time :?

I rang my vet as im concerned somethings going on as ive not heard of this before? She said in the 13 years she's specialised in buns she's only known 2 others, and its similar to when some horses choke on certain grasses/feeds. She is going to investigate further for me. And said all I can do at present is keep some oxygen at home :(

Im real concerned now as what if it happens when im out??

She turns blue & I had to breathe for her this time.

has anyone else had any experience of this?

Thanks,

Leanne

Oh Leanne how scary for you. I've never heard of it unfortunatly but have you tried changing her food incase it's some kind of allergis reaction??

well the first time was def coz of a cat biscuit she stole, but the last 2 times its been grass, she was munching away & then bam!
She's been on burgess all her life so its a mystery.
Im wondering if its some kind of laryngial(?) defect? or if the initial cat biscuit choking caused a persistent problem?
I also wonder if it happens more often than I think as im out most days at college?

Ask your vet wether it could be a possible reaction to either the cats or something they may be passing out in there urine??? Do they pee outside???? Just a thought as i had a bunny once who had an allergic reaction to Hay!

Poor bun not being able to munch on hay :(

the thing is, they are all in contact all the time & this has only(from what ive seen) happened when she's eating?

They live free range in the garden & only come in the kitchen to demand treats!(thats how she stole a cat bikkie!)

I will speak to my vet again 2moz as im taking my mums cat for a check up ~ he got run over 2 days ago :(

The good news is she's now getting bored on my lap & her breathings back to normal! hurrah!

Awwww poor cat our cat got ran over in july i think it was and dislocated his pelvis he was not a happy cat after 10 days of being locked in a kennel!

He was very lucky, no broken bones and fingers crossed his bladder is ok. Just badly bruised :(
Sorry to hear ur cat hasd the same misfortune...

The funny part is that my dad is fuming as its cost £200 & they've only had toby 6 weeks! He was a stray my brother bought home & my dad was adamant they were having 'no more pets' but my bro has agreed to pay :) (my dads a tight ****)

emergency vet & xrays at 8pm is what boosted the price up :?
My vet is in London, so went straight to the local surgery!

It happened again :( last night.
Spoke to vet, going in on friday just to check everything else is tickety boo for the sake of it really.
She has no other signs of a problem such as teeth, a mass being in her throat, resp probs. eating normally, breathing normally, acting normally.

Really baffled?!?

Here's a guess: if your rabbit has accumulated too much fur in his stomach, thru out the years, then regular eating could cause choking because of the extra stuff that he shouldn't have in his stomach.

Now, if it is fur, you are suppose to feed them (this is my vet's recommendation) papaya and pineapple enzyme chew. They break down the furball in their stomach and rabbit loves to eat it due to its favor. You give it to them once a week. I use the brand name NuLife.

Or else, it could be something else inside his stomach that he can't digest and stuck there. An x-ray can get to the truth.

by the way, it's very hard to read your mesg. when you put it in that pink color.

Hiya, thanks for that!

I will give it a go for sure, my rats are given the dried papaya & pineapple from asda, do you think this is just as good or should I go for the nulife stuff?

Xray is the next step next week :?

Im back to black now! :)

Hey all,

Just asking for some good luck vibes for lovage please!

She is going in for sedation, poss GA on friday to investigate further as finally she has some more signs (excessive saliva at the back of her throat) back teeth looked ok, but a double check & a thorough as can be investigation of her airways are to be done...Im just worried as even though my vet is fantastic im concerned there is something nasty in her throat that may cause a prob with sedation/GA :(

Wishing your bunny all the luck and good vibes in the world. I know how worrying it is to have a sick bun. Really hope she will be ok.

I'm sorry I missed this post. The dried papaya & pineapple dry fruit that you buy at grocery stores in my opinion won't be enough, which is why my vet recommend once a week, the NuLife Enzyme chew.

All the rabbits that I feed (and other rabbits from friend) love the tablet chew, they just eat it, and they love the taste.
