  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

ok i'm pretty sure that my british giant buck has worm :( i was out tonight 'socialising' with the rabbits and he left a huge pile of poo on my lap when i went to brush it off i saw i very small white 'wriggly' thing in some of his cannon sized droppings, only a few i checked all the ones in his hutch and only came up with about 4 'wriggly' things lol, sounds stupid they must be worms. So does this sound like worms to you? is it serious? can i treat it? will it infect the other buns? what should i do??

thanks guys, im paniking again now...

id be inclined to consult a vet on this one i personally havent had this sorry but cant do any harm in getting him off the the vets

yeah im gonna ring in the morning, i've found some info on the net about pin worms, apparently all buns have them but sometimes they can increase, i personally doubt this story as having kept buns all my life have never come across this before...

Rabbits can and do get worms, your bun needs to see a vet. Worms can make a bun lose weight. Take a sample along if you can

my british giant cross has had worms 3 times .
Easy to treat with stuff from the vet but may have to treat other buns too as they can be passed on if sharing excercise area or live together.

I think they get worms off grass and hay, same as horses and guinea pigs do - On the thread I linked to above, some people routinely worm theirs, but most people don't unless the rabbit seems ill somehow - it can mimic the symptoms of gut stasis - My vet didn't think rabbits need worming, but if they eat the same stuff as guinea pigs, and they need routine worming every 3mnths, then...?

thanks guys ad him to the vets and got some panacur wouldn't even have had to take him if i'd known how much weighed, i love our vet. ;) they dont need worming only if they show signs and its pretty obvious. they're still visable in his poo but now they're clearly dead

cody's now better and worms have gone, well appearing broken up in his poos, none of other buns show signs.... or me either lol, don't fancy taking the med either they look nasty and he didn't like them lol,

Glad Cody's better now :D

Just wondering can rabbits catch human worms??

Can the human catch the rabbit worms??

not sure about this but if you practise good hygeine around animals and wash your hands before touching your mouth or food, I don't see how you could catch anything. :)
