Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Holly's Bum again!

Hi all and Happy new year!

Okay, Holly's bum has gotten worse even with a good cornstarch bath everyweek. She has developed a large mat on her tail. How do I remove it? I don't want her skin to tear and I certainly don't want to cut her. What can I do?

can you get someone to hold her while you cut most of the matt off? Once it's shorter you could work cornstarch into the bit near her skin and that would loosen it all up probably...Sounds like she needs a cornstarch thing twice a week instead of just the once - did you find out what's causing it or is she just overweight?

Treacle's bum is the same at the moment. I've got most of it off but there was one lump i couldn't remove without hurting him and some residue  so... I'm getting my mum to come around to help!!!! I find it best if one person holds the bunny on its back on their lap, towel underneath and the other gives him a bum wash with some warm water and a little baby shampoo then a rub dry with the towel and hey presto nice clean fluffy bunny!

and while she's round I'm going to get her to help trim Niamh's claws and groom Toffee and caramel but she doesn't know that yet!!!

How wriggle is she? I use nail sissors for matts that are close to the skin. Sstart at one edge, slide the sissors under a few hairs (you'll be able to see you've missed the skin) and cut those, then repeat. You don't have to do it all in one go, you can have several sessions.

I guess she'll be getting a trim! I took her to a vet about a month back but I think he did a crappy job. He gave a brief general exam and said she was fine. My mom had to take her becuase i didn't have time to. i was worried about a kidney/bladder/urinary problem because she started drinking lots of water. She drinks atleast 48 oz. of water a day and usually more. I want to get her back for another checkup and maybe get blood drawn. She isn't overweight so I think she has some sort of infection or internal problem. I won't take her to the same vet though, I will find a small animal specialist that knows what they're doing. Until I get her in I guess I will do double the cornstarch bathes.

Thanks for your help guys!

As long as your just cutting the matt off im sure you wont get the skin!
