  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Twitching paws

Jayne

Mama Doe
Sorry I'm not very good at explaining things but here goes! Gabbie seems to have twitchy front paws, she sits on her back legs and sort of moves them as if she's digging in mid air (difficult to explain) then licks at them for awhile. She hops about fine,no sign of a limp and she's eating, drinking etc just as normal. Is this something bunnies do? I'm still abit of a novice  Thanks for your help.

Hi Jayne! If she is sort of sitting up on her haunches and waving her front feet about then licking them and maybe rubbing them down her face/ears this is quite a normal bunny ablution ritual!! It almost looks like they are shaking something off their front feet. Not sure if I have understood your description correctly but it doesn't sound like Gabbie has a problem. Other than maybe a washing obsession!! Jane and Buns xx

Thanks for reassuring me! I think thats probably what they're doing as it is wet and horrible here.I worry so much about them,my husband says I worry if I've got nothing to worry about then I'm ok as I'm worrying again! I think he might be right but don't tell him!!

Jane, just read your reply and you've described it perfectly!!! (I couldn't and I've been watching them for ages!!) I think they are only having a clean up,poor little souls fancy being lumbered with a mum like me!

Sometimes when its soggy they give their back feet an extra flick when they run/hop too :D

Thanks everyone I'm sure you must all think I'm a real dumbo!!!! I am!! What you've all said makes perfect sense.Gabbie and Sylvie do look as if they think "Oh no the neurotic mother is here again  !!"

I remember when I saw Marlon do that the first time I thought he was having some kind of fit. After a while I realised he did it as part of his grooming and assumed it was fine.
Then Bella arrived and she does it too so I decided my assumption was correct.
