  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I know this is not strictly bunny related.... but it is animal welfare related, and I'm stuck in a bit of a dilema!! I know lot's of you have dogs too, so hoping you can help!!!

For the past few weeks / months there has been a car in the car park for our office building that has had a little white terrier looking dog in it all day (from about 8am - 2pm on average). Now I don't know who the car belongs to, but I have taken down the registration mark and the bay number as I was considering reporting it. :?

I'm sure the owner doesn't mean it any harm and I don't want to stick my nose in, but this thing is shut up in a cold stuffy car for a majority of the day, with it's only exercise being walking between the front and back seats - and I dread to think what it does when it needs the loo!?

If I was to tell the RSPCA would it be worth it? or am I just making a big deal out of nothing? :?

OMG yes I think you should! The owner shouldn't be doing that in the first place! I would if it was me.

I'd say report it BUT if the dog has access to water whilst in the car, is not getting over-heated...unlikely in winter, and is being fed ONCE IN EVERY 24 HOURS the current Animal Welfare Laws (dating back to 1910   ) mean that there is NOTHING the RSPCA can do     . Very sad   , Very frustrating :x :x and VERY WRONG. Hence we should all be lobbying are MPs re the new Animal Welfare Bill......Jane and Bunsxx

the RSPCA Cant / wont do anything unless the animal is in distress, if the car isnt hot and the animal has water they cant do anything, they also need the police to get into the car if the dog was in distress.

Im not saying what they are doing is right, i would never leave a dog in the car that long but our dog is actually addicted to the car, one day we just went out to get something, he jumped in the car and wouldnt come out, 2 hours later we eventually had to forcefully drag him out of the car, he hates being left behind and hes really happy being in the car, as i say i wouldnt leave a dog in the car for that long myself but some dogs do like it.

Do they leave the window open at all? is it possible to look in and see if there is water left? Is it possible to find out who owns the car and talk to them themselves?

As for the toilet most dogs can happily go that long without needing the loo, mine certainly can lol

Please don't have a go at me, as i say i wouldnt do it myself and they shouldnt really but maybe they do have an argument for doing it?

Yes, I think you should. You dont know for sure that the dog is getting let out, that the dog has food and water, and that the dog is not freezing...do you? If you are not certain, you can always give the RSPCA a ring...you never know. Poor pup :(

poor little dog how can somebody leave it in a car all day
fair enough if they didnt want to leave it at home all day but a car isnt exactly a great place to keep a dog

Could you not make a complaint to the company who use that office? It sounds like one of their employees if its every day.

Is the dog definatly not getting out during the day, as my 3 dogs come to work with me in the car well it is actually a van but they get let out every couple of hours and a walk at dinner time. Its not ideal but they always race out to the car on a morning. They sleep all day when i am at home any way so its no diffrent from being at home. I do leave them at home when the weather is freezing though.
