  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Firstly I'd ask them what surgical proceedures they REGULARLY carry out on Rabbits. Do they use the 'reversable anaesthesia (Domitor/Vetelar-Isoflo (gas) then Antisedan?? Do they use intubation of airway whenever possible during GAs?? Do they have recovery incubators with adequate oxygen therapy?? Do they give pain relief as a matter of routine post invasive surgical proceedures?? What is the in-patient accomadation...can you have a look around it?? Is there a Veterinary Nurse on sight 24/7. If they haven't shot you by this stage...  .....what is their protocol re referal to more specialist physicians...??What are the 'out-of-hours' emergency arrangements?? You can tell I am trained in interogation skills cant you!! Going back to your other thread re transfer of clinical details from vet-to-vet....Some vets WILL NOT release x-ray plates.....May be relevent re Hagrid...?? Jane and Bunsxx

The actual x-ray plate is the property of the vet who took it. Have absolutely NO IDEA why   . A new vet would probably want to re x-ray anyway before embarking on further treatment or to assess healing. I do try to keep my interogations on a 'friendly' level but at the end of the day its about the care of our beloved buns and it will be our MONEY that the vet takes. Most good rabbit vets will have no problem with polite questions from a concerned and caring client. Hope you find a vet you can develop a confident relationship with as it makes things so much easier!! Jane and Bunsxx

I make a 'pre-registration appointment' to see a vet. You may be charged a minimal consultation fee but worth it to find a good bunny vet. Most deduct the pre-reg fee if you do actually register with them!! Dont think you should be charged more than a tenner for a pre-reg chat... Jane and Bunsxx
