Too much water?

Is it possible for buns to drink too much water?

My two buns have a bowl in their cage, and a bowl out in the lounge, each holds a pint and I fill them both up everyday (plus probiotics). They normally spill a bit in their cage, and get wet faces/chins when they drink from the bowl so they won't be drinking all of that. They're both eating well - lots and lots of hay, and just a few pellets so I'm not worried about them.

Really I'm just wondering what is too much, so I can keep an eye on this?

I am assuming that drinking too much would signify kidney problems? what other symptoms would a bunny with kidney problems show? Just so I can be vigilant.

[I seem to have the opposite problems to everyone else I think they drink too much water and eat too much hay - especially Lavender, she never stops, she needs a conveyor belt to her mouth! ]

Rabbits water intake partly depends on their diet. So if your buns pack away the hay they'll drink more water than rabbits eating fresh grass of lots of vegetables because those have lots of water in them :)

I am worried about my Holly in regards to water. She drinks atleast 32 ounces a day. It worries me because she eats a good amount of hay each day, but she eats lots of veggies (2 cups) and no pellet. Should I get her checked out?

The 'normal' water consumption for a bun is 50-100ml/kg/24hrs!! The more fresh veggies they have the less they drink!!. Jane and Bunsxx

hi

they also drink more if they're bored I think - it passes the time nicely watching us fill their bowl

Maa drinks 3 bowls of water a day - and wees for England - should I be worried? :?

Buns can get diabetes can't they? :? Would this be a sign of that from buns drinking an unusal amount of water?? :?

Theoretically Yes they can, but it cannot be diagnosed by a single blood test. A series of them are needed as stress makes a buns glucose level rise (hyperglycaemia) which could give a 'false positive' result for diabetes mellitus. Drinking/weeing a lot more than usual is more likely to be indicative of a renal (kidney) problem. A single blood test would be needed to diagnose this. Jane and Bunsxx

My bun has a bottle.. and drinks hardly anything!!!
The bottle works and he can get to it no problem, I've seen him use it.. but he just doesn't seem to drink a lot!

Tilly and Humphrey drink a lot. When I got them, they were drinking a full medium sized bunny bottle in a week. I wormed them with Panacur and they cut down on the water by about half.

With all their other problems, it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if they had kidney problems and/or diabetes! In fact, I'm surprised my rabbit specialist vet hasn't yet suggested I get them tested!

Oli drinks a little from his bowl and Sylvia I never see drinking. They all have fresh grass every day. I suppose you could ask for a kidney/blood test? I do think it depends a lot on how much water-filled food you give them (ie grass and veg). b-m

So it seems that its not just me thats concerned - I am also assuming that central heating makes a difference? Plus we have a dehumidifier going constantly at the moment (emptying at least 4 litres of water out of it a day!) cos since the winter set in we have condensation in our flat - its rented so we're moving out straight after christmas. I know the dehumidifier will evapourate some of the water from their bowls but am also concerned it will dehydrate the buns - the sooner we move out the better. They do seem to constantly have their heads in their water bowls lately.

I think for my two its a combination of all of the things I've mentioned.

Am off to put a bowl of water somewhere in the flat that the buns can't get to, and see how much evapourates out to try to help me gauge how much they're drinking.

Have you tried giving him a bowl, Lavender has never taken to using a bottle, she always uses a bowl and then Charlie learned from her to do the same.
