bun for christmas

becki_moorcroft

Warren Scout
hiya there,

my name is becki, i'm 20 years old and have kept rabbits since i was 3. I currently have 5 bunns (3 mini lops, 1 mini rex and 1 british giant). I am a brc member and i do show and breed my lops, but hey they're my babies and pets first and foremost.

What i am asking here is that i have 3 hutches at the moment, in my garden, empty without any planns, they're outside (and all my other buns have now moved into my shed) and measure 4' X 2'. I had no idea what to do with them, till i thought about all the poor lonely bunnies spending christmas in a shelter or rescue. And decided i have the space time and abilities to take one on.

So i was wondering if anyone could give me advice on where to go, do any shelters require foster carers for a short time only, as i'd love to do that (even if i would end up keeping them in the end lol i'm too soft).

I live in the north east (cleveland area) and the only rescue i know of close to me is the RSPCA, i didn't know if any one here could point me somewhere of use.

I don't mind what breed (although i don't really have space for another giant), or temperament as i've dealt with and tamed buns with behavioral problems before (its amazing what a good cuddle can do). I'd be just willing to take the poor littl'un who'd been there the longest and give them a nice happy christmas and a rest of their life.

Just the one buck or doe or a bonded pair. I only want to fill up one hutch (as i still live with my parents they wouldn't let me go out and bring in 6 rescues .... shame like, although i did talk them into letting me keep the mice i rescued.) but if this worked out and everyone was happy then i'd do the same thing next year with the next hutch ;) )

Might be worth having a look on the rabbit in need section to see where the rescuers are. Is Manchester near u? There are a couple of rescuers over that way, another in leicester and Bolton.

Hiya,

Yes, lots of rescues do use foster carers. It's a great way to help them out and they'll often provide you will everything you need plus pay vet bills and some even provide their own hutches aswell!

Depending on the rescue they may do long term or short term fostering. Short term is for rabbits that need a little tlc or socialising before they go up for rehoming or where there isn't room for them at the rescue so you care for them until a space free's up.

For fostering it's best is you find a rescue near you so it's easier to get the bunnies and your nearby if there are any problems and sometimes they like you to use their vet.

There is a list of rescues one Rabbit Rehome, if you have a look and try contacting the rescue near you hopefully you'll turn up one that could do with some help :)

Best wishes,
Tamsin

I think you should have Libby in the in need section in here!!! :D

You're so lucky your parents let you have more than one.

there's not many rescues local to me, so it looks like fosterings out, never mind, anyhoo i want to set up my own bunny rescue when i have my own place. But i've found a bunny (or 3 lol) to adopt ;), so they'll be 3 new additions to my bunny family next week... i feel so giddy lol
