Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hi Folks,

Has anybody heard of these Vets?

http://www.rasevetcentre.co.uk/

The Rase Veterinary Centre in Louth, Lincolnshire is the practise I am talking about.

I rang up enquiring for a friend about neutering costs for Rabbits. I nearly feel of my chair in shock when the receptionist said the prices!

Just under £20 for a castration and just under £30 for a spay!

It’s the cheapest I have ever seen for Rabbit neuters.

I’m a bit dubious about recommending them because there so cheap and I have never used them.

Any thoughts/opinions welcome. :)

Kindest,

Louise

OMg - much cheapness

These prices are unbelieveable - while I know nothing about them I suppose they are pro-active enought to have a web site then at least they are keeping up with the times :D

maybe they are in an area where people could not pay higher prices and they are at least encouraging them to visit the vets by keeping prices low.

lol Pam

Wow indeed  those are very good prices, but I would ask a few questions about their pre and post op care before using them.
For example, what drugs do they use to put a bunny under for surgery? do they keep bunnies separate from dogs and cats in a recovery area, do they give pain relief, heat pads etc...these type of questions can help reassure you that they are providing a good quality service
I suspect as they do neutering on a large scale, they can charge reduced rates, and probably are very geared up for the ops too :) :)

The information they have about rabbit is all quite good though. I'm always surprised by the varying cost of castration. Presumably the cost of drugs aren't going to be effected by the area of the country so it must be wages/rent and profit that effects charges. If they neuter on a large scale they could well provide a low cost service without cutting corners. Definately a good idea to give them the third degree first to check though :D

my vet charges £25, and £30 for them, they are a rural vets practice and I think that pet treatments are cheaper as they also have a lot of farm animals they treat too

cheap doesnt mean bad, my vets are really good and keep clued up :D

I would say go in and have a chat about their work

I have used a Rase Veterinary in Grimsby and they are very good. I dunno if they are all connected. But all my rabbits and dog went there....they are very helpful as well.

There is a so called 'Exotics Specialist Vet' quite near me (rabbits fall into the 'exotics' category). They charge £80 for a Castration  and £120 for a Spay   I have not had many positive reports re the care they provide either.....  Jane and Bunsxx

Thanks for all your replies. I'm definitely going to ring back and ask some questions re there neuter operations.

I’ve read a few posts on here about female Rabbits chewing there stitches after a spay. I believe vets can actually stitch them back up so they can’t do this? Does this procedure have a name or what is this type of stitching called?

Thanks,

Louise

They do internal stitches which mean the stitches are on the inside rather than outside where they could be chewed. Some vets also use a surgical glue to close the wound, though I've heard in the rat fancy that neutered bucks have found the glue irritating and chewed at it.

My vet uses internal stitches and glue on females and doesnt use anything on the males (the sack shrivels up a lot quicker without stitches or glue)

Hi ellepoter, I too live in Sheffield and I use Abbey vets who are also very cheap, they were half the price of my local vet and there's one vet in particular who specialises in rabbits and has performed many spaying and castrating operations on RSPCA bunnies.

I travel to the Highgreen branch but all the operations take place in Barnsley.

Iv'e had both my boys done and Lavender their mum and everything has been fine.

I would recommend them.

The vets round here are very cheap too (I'm 40 minutes from Louth). Bobby's neuter was about £25, the vaccs are also very cheap. Advantages of living in the sticks :D

i use abby vets too , hoyland, barnsley and cudworth branches . they are all very good.
never heard of the one you mentioned ellepotter

Wow, much cheapness! Here in Manchester I'm expecting to pay somewhere around the £80 mark for a spay. Maybe if I wait until I'm at home (fairly rural in parts), it'll be cheaper...hmmm.

Thats so cheap, iv'e just paid £60.06p  to have Barney done last friday, £75.00 plus to have a doe done

I wish we had vets like that here.

When I asked my vet how much for a spay they said £27 but then they add the anaesthetic and medicines on top with VAT it came to £60. So always ask if the price includes everything!
