I have an eight and a half month old Sooty Fawn Mini Lop, her name is Milly she is now living indoors due to all the fireworks, the other weekend,(my partner said she would never live indoors ha ha)

She will not use her litter tray as a toilet, she scrabs all the woodshavings out and uses it to sleep in and goes to the toilet where ever she likes, in the cage. Also she has started chewing the bars of the cage,

Milly is going to the vets on Friday, to be spayed, so hopefully this may make her better with the litter training (I hope) as it is costing £75.00

Ali and Milly :)

Hello :D Spaying Millywill probably help with her litter training but it may take time. Also, the places she has already used to wee will be favorite places for her to return to  Have you tried different sorts of litter to put in her tray. :? If you try putting some hay over the wood-shavings she may munch on it rather than dig. Or you could try using wood-pellet litter. As for the chewing on the bars of her cage...does she have other things to chew on such as some willow toys (the not always popular PAH sell them). Or a cardboard box or old telephone directory. Once a bun starts chewing the bars of their cage it can be a difficult habbit to break. So try offering lots of alternatives for Milly to chew. Not sure how old Milly is but her behaviour is also likely to calm down once she becomes an adult bun. Jane and Buns xx

Thanks for the reply Jane, I have tried different sorts of litter an now on the wood pelets, but not tried it with hay on the top, as for chewing she has lots of toys on the floor and hanging from the bars as well but she still does it, I am trying to get hold of an apple branch for her to chew on can get on at the weekend, but she wont feel like chewing them

Thanks Ali and Milly

Hiya,

Spaying should help, it's the hormones that cause problems and these take a few weeks to settle so don't expect instand results though :)

Have you tried giving her a second tray? Pop that in the place she wees most often and put any stray poops in it too.

Rabbit chew alot so as Jane suggests give her lots to chew on other than the bars :) Also make sure she has plenty of hay. Hiding her food so she spends time foraging can help - things like mixing the pellets into the hay or hiding them under things she can pick up and through.

You can also tie stripes of wood to the bars in her favourite spot. Bunnies love apple tree branches if you can find someone with a tree to nick some from :D

Hi Tasmin,

I have put the second tray in this morning, she has'nt been near the new one at all but sleeping in the old on :(

Hello again. Your vet might have something called 'Bitter Apple Solution'. It is a non-toxic but yuk tasting solution that is used to try to prevent pets chewing a wound. Maybe you could rub some of it on the bars of Milly's cage..... :? :? I used to have a Hamster that chewed the bars of his cage...all night Every night for 3 years...!!    Jane and Buns xx

I had problems with litter training until I bought I larger cat litter tray. I put newspaper in the bottom and hay on top and they sit inside it munching the hay and poop all in one corner.

my Nala still hasnt got the idea of using her tray.. Simba is very tidy but Nala just poops as she hops  Luckily she does save her wee for her cage altho not always in the tray so at least not on the carpet anymore.. i think maybe she wasnt trained as a youngster.
Hopefully you will be able to sort you Milly's toiletting habits out after her spay operation. What sort of cage is she in? Simba used to chew the bars when he was in a ferplast cage but since he moved into his big dog crate he doesnt do it anymore.. could also be the fact he has a girlfriend or maybe the bars arent as tasty :?

Hi to you all, just got the biggest shock this morning, I took Milly to the vets she had a pre-op check, and guess what she's not a she after all she's a Boy, so what do I do now will the littre trainning be easier and I need a new name as well any sugestions

Ali  :?

ooooooh  How about Milo or Mitchel or Mickey, along the Mi theme
Did he get neutered anyway then? That should help with the toilet training anyways

 It's a boy!
He should be better at litter training when he's been neutered. We had the same thing happen with a cat called Milly that turned out to be a boy, he's now called Billy :D

Hi just back from picking Him up from the vets, all seems ok wound looks clean he's been eating, and drinking. still can't think of a name!!!!
I'm still in shock

Ali and Bunny :D

Awww  That should definately help with the litter trainning. Considering he was an 8 month old boy you're lucky he wasn't spraying urine around the place like a tom cat ;)

Again it will take a few weeks for the hormones to settle so don't expect over night success, more likely a gradual improvement :D

hi

Aww - boys are just as adorable - If you haven't been serving his hay up in his litter tray, then that's the problem - mine can only get hay if they are in their tray, so that's where they toilet, even the unspayed ones (mostly - Tia is the exception as she likes to pee on carpet  )

Hi
I have a corner litter tray with a hay ball hung over the top, he can reach it easliy, will this not do the same thing or has the hay got to be in the tray

Ali and Bunny with no name

He had a good night still looking a bit sorry for himself, not eating a great deal but having a bit,

He's now started weeing in his food bowl   done it three times now direct shot each time. :?

Have you been emptying the wee from the food bowl into the litter tray?

Cosmos my entire male was peeing on a straw mat - I ended up putting the straw mat in his litter tray and he soon got the hint. Incidentally he was spraying up the walls too but since being done has been pretty clean!

A hay ball over the top is great for giving them fresh, unsoiled hay but initially a bit in the tray will help for poops as they like to nibble while they poo and straining up with the neck doesn't produce the right angle for squeezing out currants ;) !

Hi Caz,

You would not beleive this but Iv'e just put a handful of hay in the litter tray and he's just weed in it, is it a fluke????? or has my luck changed

Just an update,

He's running around at the moment(still without a name and can't stop calling him Milly or she, I can't get out of the habbit) like his normal self eating and drinking ok, had a bit of luck with the litter training today no puddles anywhere, just in the litter tray :D :D so maybe he has got the idea at long last.

Got a short list of names at the moment, Alfie, Harvey, Barney or Digby, or has any one else got any ideas please :)

Thanks

Ali and Bunny with no name
