  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

:D :D HAGRID IS HOME....YAY!! Oh Eve he is such a brave boy. I have tried and failed to scan and post the dietry advice from RO for buns who've sustained a fracture. However, here's a brief summary. Collagen(chains of small proteins) form the basis of bones, cartilage and most other connective tissues. Therefore the diet for a recovering bun should contain elevated levels of good quality proteins. Minerals give bones strength and rigidity. The predominant mineral is calcium. The rabbit absorbs most of the calcium eaten so a sufficient amount in a recovering buns diet is necessary to promote bone healing and strength. Other minerals needed for healing are phosphorous(a correct balance of calcium/phosphorous is required for correct bone formation),zinc, manganese and boron. Vitamins A,C,D and E also play an important role. Vitamin C promotes healing and helps fight infection. It is also required to 'activate' vitamin D which is required for bone growth. Vits A and E have an important role in regulating immunity. Essential Fatty Acids also play a part and are related to the inflammatory responses at the sight of an injury. Omega 3 Fatty Acids have been found to be less inflammatory,to strengthen the immune system and protect against thrombosis. So maybe your vet might advise a Multi- vitamin Mineral Suplement for Hagrid. If you want me to send you a photocopy of the article PM me your address. You could show it to your vet. Its written by a Dr Christine Huggett who specialises in the dietry needs of rodents and lagomorphs. Lots of nose rubs for Hagrid and MEGA healing vibes. Jane and Buns xx
