  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Sneezing!

Hey. Lily has started sneezing and am getting worried. There doesn't seem to be any discharge. When she was a baby she developed severe sneezing and a runny nose. It was diagnosed as a respiratory infection and needed anti-biotics. They didn't work and the poor wee soul needed a nasal swab. She was put on stronger anti-biotics and thankfully it cleared up. Am scared it has come back. She is also terrified of the vet after her nasal swab and gets very distressed. What do you guys think?

What sort of bedding, floor covering do you use? Is this an indoor or outdoor rabbit? How long ago was your rabbit last treated for a respiratory infection? Do you know what infection it was last time?

If you have a rabbit who is 'sneezing' do look at the bedding you use, wood shavings are not ideal as they can be quite irritant to a rabbits respiratory system. Using a hay which is relatively dust free may help and always ensure that you hay is fresh and is not mouldy. choose a nice fresh smelling, hay which has decent sized pieces.

If this is not related to dust, do get your bun checked out again by the vet.

Thanks for your reply. We do use wood shavings underneath hay with dust extracted. It all gets replaced regularly. She was treated for her respiratory infection roughly 2 years ago and hasn't had any problems since until now.

I can't remember what kind of respiratory infection she had but the vet did say it would always probably be with her. Think i'll just take her to the vets to have her checked out just to be on the safe side.
