Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Rabbit medical Insurance!

Hi

Has anyone taken out medical insurance for their rabbit? I was wondering if it was worth doing or whether it would be a better idea to just put some money to one side each month just in case a big vet bill comes up. I know that sometimes the treatment can be very expensive and unexpected.

If anyone does recommend taking out insurance do they have the name of a good insurance company?

I'd love to get your opinion.

Thanks a lot
Karen

I think Petplan is the only insurer that provides decent rabbit insurance. It covers for life, and for illnesses as long as they last. If you have only one or two bunnies, it's probably worthwhile doing, but if you have more, then a vet bills savings account would probably work out better.

I am with Petplan and they have been very good at paying out so far.

I'm with Petplan for one of my buns, the others I just pay for as and when. So far haven't needed to use them but I know they are a good company if the need ever arose!

Hiya. I'd say that if you only have 1 or 2 bunsters take out insurance. Pet Plan is about £9.00 a month per bun but covers them for life. Veterinary care for buns is advancing in leaps and bounds (or perhaps I should say hops and binkies!!) and there is now a Rabbit Specialist Referal Clinic at Bristol. Referals from vet practices can be v expensive...my recent experience £800 for a cardiac referal!!  So unless you can afford to put aside a significant amount each month for veterinary care :? I'd say take out insurance!! Jane and Buns xx :D

I pay £25 per month into an account just for bunny expenses. I try to use this only for emergencies, and pay for day to day stuff and vacs and neutering out of my monthly salary. Having heard how some others have had to pay out for dentals etc, plus most policies have an excess, I think this is better. The cheapest quote for my 5 buns was nearly £50!!! and still had excess etc to pay :?

I have just insured mine with Petplan, and they have 2 months free if you arrange it on-line, I think the deadline is 21 November currently.

I did have problems with setting up the direct debit on line, it came up with a bank that wasn't mine, but when I called them and explained this they still let have the 2 months discount.

I've just cancelled my insurance, it was fine with 3 buns though now I've got 6 it wasn't worthwhile! and I've only ever had one problem that came to more than the excess anyway!

Do consider the excesses which you will need to cover, also discuss this with your vet, some will allow you to put a succession of visits on to the same treatment bill. It really depends on whether you have a sickly bun. Neutering and vaccination and dental work is not usually covered by many insurance plans.

because i have so many i just put money into anccount or use the O/H's credit card for emergencies

thanks for all of your replies.

I think I might get flossie insured - for peace of mind. I've just got to check that they will cover dental treatment.

Thanks again
