  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Worried about Mikey

Mikey seems to have a lot of matted fur under his chin. He had treatment for an abcess in his jaw bone which is still there, im wondering if these could be related.

Any ideas ?

Right in the centre? Sort of below where his front teeth are but under his chin? Rabbits have a scent gland there which can sometimes make the fur matt.

It would be worth checking out with the vet if you're worried though.

Sounds a bit like he may need another check by his vet. Is he on any treatment for his abscess.....?Is he eating OK?? His vet will be able to assess whether any surgical treatment is needed and may prescribe antibiotics and anti-inflammatories.If he does have an op' to treat the abscess the vet may suggest placing an antibiotic bead into the wound cavity which realeases antibiotics slowly and directly into the wound. Sometimes this can be more effective than systemic antibiotic therapy. Better tell your bun to make an appointment with his vet!! :D JCO xx

He was on two lots of antibiotics which stooped the abcess getting any bigger. He has not had these for a while. The vet didnt think that it would be a good idea to remove the abcess as it is in his jaw bone
He isnt off his food

Max has got quite a big dewlap and tends to get matts under his chin, probably because he can't reach it. I have had to snip them carefully out with scissors because he doesn't like being combed there.

Healing vibes to Mikey - hope that it is nothing to worry about - let's hope it's just to do with moulting.
Best bet is for a check up with the vets - it will put your mind at rest.
Hope you are alright little man - xxxx

Im going to take him after this morning.
I went down to him and all he kept doing was stamping his feet at me. This is not like him at all i know he can be grumpy but not like this. He wasnt really that interested in his food either.
