  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Quarantine

Jack's-Jane

Wise Old Thumper
I'm just wondering if I am being over cautious as whenever I bring a new 'rescue bun' into our Refuge I always quarantine the bun for 14 days. I do this regardless of where bun has come from or what history I have managed to obtain. Am I being neurotic.....?? JCO

We don't quarantine our buns as most of them are so ill that they may not last long - we want them to have company and friendship if possible so we try to see what they are like and try to bond them.
We only had Camille for 8 days last year but she bonded immediately with Duke and they where so happy, if I had quarantined her she would have missed out on that love.
It's a hard one to do - some people do and some don't. I really think it's each to their own on this - we just choose to try and bond if possible so that they get some love from their own kind :D

It depends on wher mine come from. if it's rescue then i usually don't as they have normally been quarentined there but if it's an unkown i do

What are you quarentining them against and how?

For example VHD would only be successfully quarentined if you had a complete change of clothing between rabbits. If your existing rabbits are vaccinated then there isn't much risk to them anyway.

Myxy is spread by biting insects unless the rabbit is obviously ill - producing puss then it's not contagious. Treating for fleas and vaccinating existing rabbits would make quarentine fairly pointless for this.

Something like pastruella can be hidden for weeks or months - although the stress of the move could show it up.

EC can show no symptoms in many of the rabbits carrying it - so unless you routinely treated for it (a months course I believe) as part of quarentine then it would be no help to that.

Mites, lice, ring worm etc. should all be easy to spot straight off.

There are a few other things that can pass from rabbit to rabbit but they're not that common.

I don't think quarentine is pointless but you need to have an idea of what your quarentining against so you know what periods and precautions would be applicable.
