  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

poppy's tumor

Young Bun
Does anyone have any helpful information for me please
Poppy my 8 year old female bunny has lost the use of her left back leg in addition to this her tummy is swollen each side, my vet says it could be liver or kidney problems put her on Baytril and Panacur then a week later he said he thinks it may be a tumor, an x-ray would not show it up as it is probably in her uterus. The prognosis is not good and to prepare myself for losing her. I was to take Poppy back this Monday but over the weekend she was bright, not in pain, eating and drinking ok, I decided not to put her through the stress of going in the car being pulled about by the vet again and cancelled the appointment, the vet says there is nothing more he can do for her, she is still eating ok and on her medicatioon.
Has anybody elsw had this and what did you do, and what happened to your bunny
thank you

I think you know Poppy best, and only you can decide whether to take her to the vets for more tests etc, or to carry on at home giving her the love she needs. Personally I would say that if all the possibilites have been exhausted at the vets and I could keep her happy at home I'd probably go for that.

Hiya,

If she isn't spayed then a uterine tumour is a possiblilty and that would show on the ultra sound. However treatment for that is spaying which is risky at her age :( It's possible it would have spread to other areas and be in operable too.

It might be an idea to ask if he can refer you to a rabbit specalist - it's possible they can have a look with an ultrasound.

Best wishes,
Tamsin
