Mite treatment

Just wondering who else's bun has suffered from Mites/flease before and how did you get rid of them? Charlie has got them and i was given some cream to put on the back of his neck every day, but i don't really think it's working. I got to go back to the vets in a few days time for a check up tho.

Just wondering if there are any other ways to get rid?

Oh right thanks for that, well that might be the next step then when i go back if they havent cleared up. But if your bun gets mites again, would the injection still work, or would you have to get another one?

Oh powder...thanks for that, i'll bare that in mind. Yes Charlie is a right licker, so he would lick it off knowing him. lol!
Thanks

Hi there. There is a 'spot-on' treatment for fleas/mites that your vet should have. It comes in a little tube and you just break open the top and drop the liquid onto the skin of the 'scruff' area of buns neck. It is then absorbed through the skin and eradicates the mites/fleas. There is also an injection your vet could give called 'Ivomectin'. Sadly both are 'chemicals' but fleas/mites can be a real menace if not treated. And of course fleas are a means of transmission of Myxomatosis. If you have other animals they too will need to be treated. Hope this doesn't sound too daunting just wanted to pass on as much info as I am aware of. JCO

Mites are usually treated by either an injection or topical application of Ivermectin at the back of the neck, vets usually give 3 doses 7 - 10 days apart.

Hi JCO,

Thanks for that. At the moment i am currently using the Spot On Cream-but i dont think it's helping too well. Charlie's mites are easy to see, but Honey has dark hair so they are slightly harder to see.

What is it that these mights live on, and can they be past onto humans?

Thanks

One of my buns Misty gets mites when he becomes run down as he as eye trouble, my Vet always gives him Ivomec injections as this clears them up he as 3 7days apart. My Vet specialises in Dermatology and as said that it as been proved that they don't get passed on to others, I have to say that as far as mine are concerned she as to be right as Misty's partner Gypsy has never got them and neither have my other buns.

There is one particular mite-Cheyleitiella-that is zoonotic (can be passed on to humans). You tend to get an itchy rash on your neck/tummy/forearms but you dont get 'ill'. Buns with dental probs are more prone to mite 'overload' (many buns have mites but show no symptoms) cos 'dental buns' have trouble grooming. Aswell as treating the bun their environment needs to be treated too.The Cheyleitiella mite can live away from the host (bun!) in the environment for 2 days!! Blimey, I could bore for England on this.....!!! JCO

Thanks you all been so helpful!

I havent got a rash, but i am ichy everwhere, i guess its because i keep thinking about it. I am concerned they will get in my hair when i cuddle charlie! Luckly enough they dont have any dental problems so thats good.

To be honest i think these mites got into the hay bag as i changed the hutch and it was the nxt day he has them, i have thrown away the hay now tho!

When i asked how they live, i mean what do they feed on? As we know Maggots feed on the rabbit flesh and when humans have lice they suck blood! Yuck...nasty thought!

Hi Sarah,

Well...its hard to explain i would say they look like small wood splinters really, and if i looked closely i could see them moving slightly. There are pretty smallish but you can only see them if you look under the fur tho. They are mainly on his back, not anywhere else!

Thanks for that - it's just that I have often wondered what they're like and I'm always worried I'll miss something!! I'm glad I don't have human kids as I'd be the biggest worrier in the world lol!
I hope his mites clear up soon - poor baby :)

Sending your bunny lots of non-itchy thoughts :)

Sarah, Patches and Blossom

My rabbit bailey has just had mites and he was having an injection every week for 3 weeks to get rid of them, hes having his last one on tuesday. I used spot-on on one of my other rabbits and it made her fur go weird.

That's okay Sarah, try not to worry too much, just make sure you check the bunnies as often as you can. I guess i was lucky enough to find them that morning as i think it happened over night as they was okay the day before.

Aww thanks for the non itchy bunny thoughts! lol x

Hi Kez, aww poor Bailey sounds like they don't go away over a few days then! :( So far the Spot on cream has been okay on their fur, but i dont feel its doing too much at the moment, so injections might be the next step! Let me know how it goes! xx

ok i looked at pets at home for you. the only things for rabbits were a spot on treat ment (the same make as they do for dogs!)
some powder (which i think is useless!) and some spray (also useless)
i think your best bets are spot on or jabs :D

Aww thanks for taking the time to look, very kind of you!

Yes i'll keep an eye on the mites over the next few days but i do think Injections will properly be needed to solve it.

Thanks x

The spot on from the vets is called Advantage (specifically for animals under 4kg, i.e. rabbits, small cats + small dogs). Princess had this when she had mites and it cleared it up nicely.
