  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

My lop eared rabbit has something strange just over half way down his ear. It's like blood but with skin over it - not cut or anything though. Looks a bit like a blood clot. It is only small (less than half a centimeter). I have noticed him scratching his ears but not too excessiviley. I can't see any fleas or mites or signs of infection, but he won't stay still for that long while I'm looking at them. Do you think he needs a trip to the vets or is this normal?

He's a house rabbit and we don't have any other pets. He has hay, but no grass. He is quite a clean rabbit, he does clean him self quite a lot.

It could be a little abcess or he could have burst a blood vessel and as you say got a little clot. Make sure the vet checks in his ears as well as ear mites could make his ears itchy.

Let us know how you get on :D

It's actually inside his ear, so he'll have to look down them. I'm probably just paranoid, but I suppose it better to be safe rather than sorry.
