Tear duct problems

Hi, anyone's rabbit had a tear duct infection? Did you have to have it flushed? If so, did it get better and how many times did you have to have it done?

Thanks,
b-m

I have had two bunny's with tear duct problems.

One was Lilly she had to have it flushed three times on the third she died under aneasthetic after a vein at the back of her mouth burst and they discovered a melenoma starting to develop in it.

The second was Will and his turned out to be his roots of his front teeth being too long and pushing into the tear duct we had his teeth removed and now he's fine!

I have a French Lop with tear duct problems and he has had them flushed quite a few times. He has had his teeth out and was fine for a while but it started again. I saw an eye specialist a couple of weeks ago and there is an operation they can do but because of Misty's age and he isn't in any pain I don't want it done. I bathe his eyes twice a day with camomille tea and use an eye drop twice a day.

Harvey had his flushed twice to try and unblock them. Unfortunatly it did no good and the vet said there was no point trying it again.

Antibiotics cleared up the infection but his eyes constantly run (and look a bit of a mess). We tried wiping them every night but he seems to do a better job of cleaning himself up.

We did try getting him paired up in the hope of the other rabbit helping out but so far we have not been successful.

My rabbit Sunny had blocked tear ducts one and got them flushed, which did the trick. Turned out a few months later that he had a damaged facial nerve and his right side of the face is paralysed. The blocked tear ducts were the first sign of the developping muscle wastage...

But this is of course a very rare incident, blocked tear ducts are often related to dental problems though.

Ive had a couple of rabbits with blocked tear ducts and they both got better. The first just had it done once and the second had to have it done twice with some eye cream [fucathelmic]. It depends on the reason they are blocked as to weather they can be cured of the complaint. I would recomend that if you have a very good bunny then there is no reason to put them under to do the flush, both my rabbits were done while awake and me holding them. The vet puts a painkiller in the eye to start with and then flushes the duct.the fluid comes out of the nose, this can make your rabbit jump not with pain but with supprise at the water coming out of the nose. The vet can tell by this how blocked it is and may repeat it then and there. Both my buns were very good and there wasent any pain involved . val

Zeus had his tear ducts flushed but it didn't do much good as the problem was his tooth roots being inflammed and blocking the ducts! Once we treated that he was a whole lot better and his eyes have stopped weeping.

Fern had her tear ducts flushed a week ago but the vet also rasped her teeth as that was causing the problem.

It will still need drops and bathing but it has got loads better, also Donny cleans it for her all the time so it doesn't bother her as much anymore.

Yeah I've heard this process can be a bit hit and miss so to speak  - Buffy has had tear duct problems on and off for a year or two now - my current Vet has the opinion that they won't do the Flushing unless absolutely necessary as it's possible then your on the road for regular repeats.

Buffs eye (touch wood :!: ) seems quite well managed now and at the minute she's "Tear Free" :D - I've had quite a few different things from the Vets - Tiacil, fucathelmic but with Buffs I find the one that works the best for her is Clhrolomycetin (opps spelling  ) Ointment - which I warm to make it slightly runny and then pop in her eye. I know this one is'nt one of the licenced one's for rabbits but for some reason it just seem to work.
I also make sure that I jump on things quick and the minute I get any whiff of a flare up for her I bathe her eye with some cold tea and also use the Aggassi Eye Drops and good ole Cagney helps out to washing Buffs eye when I'm not around - ahhhhh bless her :)

Thank you everyone for all your replies. Tilly had her tear duct flushed last night, but the vet said it was still blocked with stuff. He has upped her dosage of Baytril to twice daily in the hope that this will soften the gunk and I am taking her in again on Friday for a repeat. Thankfully he didn't have to put her under but this means we still don't really know what is causing it. He said she has some spurs on her back teeth but she won't let him get a really good look with the auroscope. He said they could file them down but that it probably wasn't worth going all out and putting her under unless the flushing really doesn't work.

I hope she is ok - she is the most expensive bunny I have had yet! I so want her to get better. On a more positive note, the scar on her eye from where she had an ulcer scraped has healed really well (this is an unrelated injury). b-m

UPDATE: Tilly has to have an op to flush her duct, take an x-ray of her skull, possibly file down overgrown teeth and take cultures at the same time. Anyone had this done under anaesthesia?

b-m

My bun's been under about 4 anaesthetics to sort out molar spurs, as well as having his incisors removed (twice - one grew back  ). He bounced back fine - he was home the same day for all except the initial incisor removal op, and although he needed syringe feeding for the first couple of days he was back to normal pretty quickly.

That was pretty much what Zeus had (one of his many ops). He was fine after!

Had to giggle at your phrasing in the last line though

! I haven't had it done to me personally ;) but Zeus got through it fine!
