  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Chubbina - how is he?

I (personally) am thinking of you both all the time right now as I was once in a similar position. You are obviously a brill rabbitty mum and have managed to find yourself a very up to date rabbitty vet within 24 hours, so hopefully he is doing great.

Please post as there are lots of people here thinking about you both, and wishing Benji boy well.

Hi Wendy-Jane & other Bunny mums and dads!

Thanks for your kind message. Everyone here has been really sweet and supportive and that means a hell of a lot!

Benny didn't have the op yesterday. After the vet anaesthetised him he did an x-ray of his head and found that one of his back teeth had pushed through his mandible and this had caused the abscess. Our vet felt that teeth removal was best left to the experts and he is referring us to a rabbit specialist - the new Rabbit Clinic in Bristol. Our vet has been brilliant - he even showed us the x-rays and compared them to x-rays of normal rabbit teeth so we could understand what was happening.

I think the Bristol Clinic is only open on Wednesdays though which is a bit of a worry. Benny hasn't been himself since we got him home. I expected him to be a bit woozy and disinterested last night after the anaesthetic but he's the same this morning. His breathing is a bit louder than normal and it sounds like he's sneezing but it's more of a sigh if you know what I mean. He has eaten throughout the night though which I'm relieved about.

Thanks again for all the support. I will update when I have more news (hopefully good news next time!)

Thanks for the update Vickie. Benny is probably still feeling a bit groggy after the anaesthetic, and maybe sorry for himself aswell - I hope he feels better later on today. As you say, it's a great thing if he's been eating in the night.

I'm sorry his op isn't over, but on the positive side, at least you now know the cause of the abscess, and that it (the tooth) can be removed. Also, the Bristol clinic is meant to be THE place for rabbits so he'll certainly get the best care possible. Your vet certainly does sound excellent. I didn't know the clinic is only open on Wednesdays though - are you sure? (I'd check if I were you, cos it's AGES until next Wednesday).

Anyway, good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hugs to you, nose rubs to Benny-boy!
