  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I am taking Poppy to the vets to get a dental under aniseptic, my mum just thought can he have anything to eat before he goes? The lady on the phone never mentioned anything though so I persume he can!!

If i never knew all you lot on here I wouldnt know what to do!

Yep you must continue to give him food right up until the op as their digestive system is very sensitive and any halt in food will stop the digestive tract which can be very serious. He should have food up to and after the anaesthetic, I always take some to the vet with me.

As Nicolar said fed Poppy as you would normally right up until she goes to the vets. The reason for stopping feeding other animals/humans is that they will be sick, a rabbit can't be sick, they don't have the right muscles to be sick. I also do what Nicolar does and take some of my buns normal food to the vets with them so they can be offered some as soon as they come round form the anaesthetic. My vet normally doesn't like them to come home with me until thay have eaten and pooped.
