  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Young Bun
My wee Hope is going through phantom pregnancy, she hasn't eaten for a week. I got her home from the vet yesterday and I was told to syringe feed her baby food, which I tried just now, boy what a mess!! Any good tips on getting the food in her mouth, not on me?

Hi.. where do you live?
Syringe it very slowly into the side of her mouth, behind her front teeth.
Hope she is feeling better soon

hi

baby food's not very good for her - have you tried mixing her usual pellets with water to make a mush and then mix in baby food (apple puree is good) to make it taste nicer?

You need a large bore syringe too - the one my vet gave me was useless - I had to cut the top off to make the hole bigger for the bit that went in Pepsi's mouth.

To feed, back her up between your legs as you kneel on the floor - wrap a towel around her firmly so she's got her legs all wrapped up and just her head sticking out - her back should be towards you and lift her front end up a bit so you can see her mouth - put the syringe sideways just behind her front teeth, like Diddeen said - otherwise you may choke her.

Hope she takes it - has the vet been treating her with anything?

Apparently they do!! Its scary as the symptoms are like stasis. The vet thought thats what the problem was at first, but it turns out that she thinks she is pregnant. She is nesting and very aggresive, she attacked two vet nurses yesterday cause they moved her nest. Its frustrating to see her go through this, hopefully it won' last too long. Since I gave her the first lot of baby food, she has munched through some cabbage and some hay, so fingers crossded that my wee baby gets better soon.
