  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

I hava a 6 year old netherland dwarf, and I have nebver thought about myxi injections and VHD. Our garden is all closed off and there is NO chance another rabbit could get in! do you think it is a good idea to get him vacinated at this age?

YES! Myxi and VHD are not transmitted by another rabbit! Mixy is transmitted by biting insects and VHD by anything! you can bring it home on your shoe!

Hiya, yes I think it is very wise to get all bunnies vaccinated, as every bunny is at risk from these dreadful diseases.
Bunnies do not have to come into physical contact with other bunnies to get VHD or Myxomatosis.
VHD can be carried by you on clothing (say from a visit to a pet shop, or vets), and Myxomatosis is carried by fleas, and mosquitoes, so even houserabbits can get these diseases :(
We have our elderly Sanctuary bunnies vaccinated with no ill affects (apart from one or two being a little off colour for a day or so) twice a year for Myxomatosis and once a year for VHD.
It would be a shame for your bunny to have reached 6 years of age, and then contract a deadly disease and die in a horrible way :(
I am sure he will be fine to have the vaccinations, talk to your vet if you have any concerns though :)
Best wishes

Oh right so I have been stupid not injecting him before.

aaawww, no one has said you are daft, far from it, I think you are obviously a very caring Bunny Mummy to bother finding out the information from the forum members about vaccinations. :D
We are all learning new things each day, and that is what the forum hopes to achieve. :)

Best wishes

Can rabbits get this in the US?

Yes bunnies everywhere can get Myxomatosis and VHD....as far as I am aware, ask your Vet for specific vaccination recommendations in your area :)

Best wishes

Oh thanks :) I just wonder if rabbits can get it over here then why is it not required for us to get them vacinated over here.

Hiya have checked the American House Rabbit web site, and bunnies can get VHD and Myxomatosis in America :?
It is not required by law for you to get your bunnies vaccinated, but most vets would highly recommend that bunnies are vaccinated.
It is the only protection you have against these deadly viruses.

best wishes

Really? I bring all the bunnies to the vet atleast once a year and the vet has never said anything to me about this vacination. Hmmm I will definitely have to talk to her about that. Thanks for the information.
