Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Just a quick question, I am busy putting together a booklet of information for a couple of Jemimas babies new owners. I have become a bit confused on the safe and unsafe food lists. i have been able to find a couple of different lists but one list says a certain fruit is toxic and another says its safe.

Could anyone confirm if the following are toxic or safe. dont want to hurt the babies. :?

Pear, Blackberry, raspberry, lettuce, watermelon and oregano.

Thankx for your help in advance.
:D

I know pear is safe in moderation (a piece evey week). All lettuce is safe, but iceburg lettuce has no nutritional value and is a waste to feed them. Don't include foods on the list you aren't certain of. Especially since fruit isn't really required for them, its just nice to give them. My rabbits get strawberries and apples as their fruit and that does them just fine.

I'd avoid lettuce altogether for babies as they tend to have more sensitive tummies.

The others could be given in very small quanties. Again though for babies if they've not already had it best to leave it. Fruit is sugary so more likely to upset the tummy.

It would be best to keep the babies on their current diet until they're atleast 14weeks. So make sure they get the exact same brand of food.

If the owners want to switch to a different brand then do it gradually over about 10-14 days.

The diet should be plenty of hay, unlimited pellets (unless they're not eating hay too) and whatever fresh food they are already used too. Any food they haven't had before again needs to be introduced graually a little at a time.

The RWA produce a range of leaflets, if you contact them they should be able to send you copies or you can print them off their site here: http://www.houserabbit.co.uk/rwf/information.htm
