  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Wesley Rabbit - Sad News

I posted a few weeks back about my rescued Polish rabbit Wesley. He has tooth trouble and x-rays at the vets showed that his tooth roots were starting to go through his jawbone, most likely due to incorrect feeding as a baby. The vet filed down his teeth and said we should take things one day at a time ... said he may have weeks, if lucky he could have another couple of years ....

Well sadly today I found he has developed an abscess on his bottom right jaw. My vet said if this happened, it would mean basically that there is no more that can be done for him. He is dribbling from that side of his mouth, and also his right eye is now running too.

I have given him Metacam, and will take him in to the vet first thing Monday morning, but sadly it does look like the end of the road for him. I will not let my boy suffer, even though I have had him only a couple of months. I really love this little bun.

Would the person who lives near me with the rabbit rescue let me have her details again ... I am sorry I am so stressed I can't remember your name, but its in Westhoughton. After Monday I may need another neutered male rabbit to bond with Bluebell, she will miss him so much, as will I. I can hope for a miracle, but I don't think there will be one.

PS: It's a real sad weekend, as I lost one of my gerbils yesterday too, although he was almost 5 years old. He was the last one I had that I actually bred myself, so he is another one I will really miss. Oh what a weekend.

So sorry to hear your news, wishing you and Wesley love and nose rubs from me and smokie

:(

Aww Jane, I'm so sorry :( But at least you have the chance to say your goodbyes and spoil him rotten during his last days. Abscesses are dreadful things.

Thinking of you *hug*

Thanks you lot ... you are making me cry, but with gratitude that at least some people understand my feelings about one very small bunny

Thank you so much.

We are going though the same thing now with our Chockie :( Just give him everything he wants and love him to bits. Sometimes thats all we can do.

The thing about this forum is that attracts like minded people ... and you know that deep down, someone who can love an animal like this, cant be all that bad ...

Yes, thank you again.

Does anyone know who the rabbit rescue person is in Westhoughton, near Bolton? After Monay I may need a rabbit from her ....

Jane

So sorry to hear your news, this little bun has at least had the fortune to meet you and have a few months of being loved, something he may not have had during the rest of his short life. Spoil him rotten this weekend and enjoy him.

Have you had a look at the list on this thread to see if the rescue is on here: http://www.rabbitrehome.org.uk/centres.asp

Take care

Janice

hi

Aww - I'm so sorry Wesley's come to the end of the road - I know Bluebell will miss him but I'm glad you bonded them first - he had a happy few weeks with her, which is more than a lot of bunnies have...

So sorry to hear this news. He's a very lucky bunny to have such happy memories though.
Sendiing you lots of hugs

so sorry to hear about wesley, will be thinking of you both tomorrow, hugs to you wesley and bluebell

I am so sorry Jane :( Give Wesley a huge hug from me and I am hoping and praying for you both that something can be done for him. You have given him a wonderful life with you and he knows what it is to be loved, which sadly many buns never experience in their lives. (((((((((( HUGS )))))))))))

Oh heck what a weekend you've had but your a lovely bunny mum and your doing what you feel is best for your little pal and as the other good forum folk have mentioned here although its really hard to say goodbye you can enjoy him the weekend and spoil him and he knows I'm sure how much you love him.

Be thinking of you tomorrow - sending a soft nose kiss for little Wesley.

so sorry to hear this news . poor wesley , who knows tho , maybe the vet will think of something else that can be done ? If not tho then take comfort in the fact that he will be in no more pain and you have given him the best life and kindest act possible . all my love . x
