  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Boosters

Herbie has just had his boosters for VHD and myxo. One cost £19, the other £22. Of course I don't begrudge this and it would be done whatever the cost, however, I'm sure this is a huge increase from last years price. What does everyone else pay.....am I being ripped off?!!

Whereabouts are you? It does vary according to area. My vets are near London and in the region of Gerrards Cross which is a wealthy area, so mine are quite high. I pay £28 for each.

My vet charges around £16 for each jab; myxi twice yearly (I'm in a high risk area), and VHD anually. I get a 5% discount for taking all 3 at once tho - not much but it helps. :)

I'm in Devon so compared to you I suppose I'm paying about the right price. Saying that, do you think if they were cheaper more people would be inclined to have their rabbits vaccinated or is ignorance and a 'can't be bothered' attitude the main reasons some poor rabbits aren't protected?

Thanks Herbert, I tend to think so too but I am biased :D

I think it's a combination of the vet prices being high and ignorance, and not enough education out there. Some ppl don't bother to get their bunnies vaccinated because of the price but there are also some who don't know about it, I feel mainly due to lack of research on their part. With any animal, ppl should do thorough background research. For example my friend is thinking of getting a Dobermann, but is doing lots of background research (I'm helping her!) and I think that any breeder would welcome a person like that. They have a bad enough stigma attached to them anyway!!

I've heard that the actual vaccinations are cheap. It's the consultation fees which bumps the price up, however, I don't think I would go anywhere else as the vet I see is extemely knowledgable regarding rabbits.....in my opinion a very rare find!

Yep it is def very good to have a knowledgable rabbit vet! My vet is v good too and even though expensive, I wouldn't go anywhere else!
