Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Rabbits Eyes

I went to the vets last Friday with my 6 year old white netherland Dwarf Poppy.

He had a sore eye which was starting to close. The vet gave me drops to clear the infection and also the vet told me he was blind and had cateracts-I thought he was blind so this wasnt a suprise!

Anyway, we put the drops in for a few days and his eyes cleared up, they were perfectly open and now they are still perfectly open they are just running and making his fur all hard and it wont come off!!!

He doesent seem to be bothered I just wondering what it is! He is a white rabbit so every bit of muck he picks up becvauise he wanders the garden everyday for at least 5 hours!

Runny eyes can be caused by a number of things, perhaps there is still some resiliant infection there - did you try oral antibiotics with the eye drops? Or have you tried a different brand so see it if clears up.

Perhaps the infection damaged his tear ducts and he is having problems flushing the tears or the area is still a bit inflammed with a residual infection causing the tear ducts to narrow (metacam is an anti-inflammatory so may help).

The eye infection could have started or have travelled to the tooth roots (via the tear duct which runs over them) and often symptoms of infected tooth roots are constant tearing eyes. Metacam and strong antibiotics are needed if this is the case (can only be diagnosed via x-ray).

Or his eye could still be sensitive after the infection and he may be having problems clearing dust etc from them. Does he blink?

Sorry I should have said does he blink more than usual as it could be a sign his eye is very dry and irritated.

If you dissolve a teaspoonful of salt into a cup of boiled but slightly cooled water and use this to bath his eye, it really helped Zeus along with eye drops and oral antibiotics.

I recently went to a specialist eye vet with one of my buns (Misty) as he is always having trouble with his eyes. I told the vet that I bathe them with salt water and he said that it is painful for a bun and to use camomille tea. You make the tea you can use the tea made up for 48hrs but then re make again, you can keep it in the fridge. It does help

Zeus never showed any sign of irritation infact he used to sit there and seemed to enjoy being fussed over. I would have thought it wasn't a very strong salt solution and just a bit above natural tears, which are salty anyway.

I have also heard tea is good but have never used it.
