Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

Hydrogen Peroxide Bunnysafe?

Krinnie

Young Bun
Floyd has a few scabs on his leg and I think maybe one of his chest (I haven't sifted through all the fur yet) that a friend mentioned when holding him. I do have some antiseptic spray for killing bacteria ect. that can be used on small animals. I bought a hamster with a scabbed toe from Petco one time and they told me this is what they were treating him with. (I believe he turned to she but the antiseptic never caused any problems) I'm wondering if it would be ok to dab some Hydrogen Peroxide on the boo-boos before I spray on the relief/antiseptic stuff. Also is Aloe Vera safe for buns?...I imagine it would be (as it was ok with the hamster, and the stuff was recomended by a small animal vet clinic) but I just thought I'd check since it's in there also.

Sorry if that's a bit confusing!

Are the scabby patches flaky like dandruff? Is the fur short or bald in those patches as it sounds like it could be mites if he has several patches.

Usually I think Hydrogen peroxide is used for cleaning abcesses but shouldn't be necessary for a wound that has already scabbed over if it actually is a wound.

Hmm I don't believe it's flaky, felt kind of like a bump if I remember correctly, the fur isn't shorter or anything but he has been a wee-itchy so I'll check a little closer come daylight. I've had cuts myself scab over and then just dabbed the hydrogen peroxide still to clean things before it really starts to heal; so.
