  • Please Note - Medical Advice

Please keep in mind that posts on this forum are from members of the public sharing personal opinions. It is not a replacement for qualified medical advice from a veterinarian. Many illnesses share similar symptoms but require different treatments. A medical exam is necessary for an accurate diagnosis, without which appropriate treatment cannot be given.

You should always consult your vet before following any suggestions for medication or treatment you have read about. The wrong treatment could make your rabbit worse or mean your vet is unable to give the correct treatment because of drug interactions. Even non prescription drugs can do harm if given inappropriately.

We are very grateful to members who take time to answer other members questions, but please do be clear in your replies that you are sharing personal experience and not giving instructions on what must be done.

Urgent Medical Advice: If you need, or think you might need, urgent medical advice you should contact a vet. If it is out of working hours phone your vet's normal number and there should be an answer phone message with instructions on what to do.

shaking of head

Alpha Buck
We have noticed that Red shaked her head alot, normally just before a really mad and energetic binky.

We are a little concerned, but for all we know this is normal for her?

Any ideas?

You usually can't see the mites but you might see eggs i think thats right! mites are black but very tiny, there's usually scratching aswell as head shaking which causes the area to be scabby and sometimes red and inflammed, i'd keep an eye on her - it could just be excitement!

Is she a REW? My REW shake or sway their heads slight to focus on something as they are a bit blind

i think tree is right, i have got a new girl here who is a himalyan and she sways from side to side, which i think is because she has bad eye sight and is trying to focus on something. i have also had a lion head that used to do this and she had cornea oedema!- dont know if that is how you spell it!

rub the end of the ear, just at the joint of their head. Is there a popping noise? If so, there is wax/dirt in their ear.

There is a special instrument to view the inside of a rabbit's ear but only vet have them.

There is a cat ear cleaner which works well w/ rabbits , I have use them before. You drip them in their ears, they will shake their ears, and the dirt come out, pay attn. to the dirt and see what it is. It could be mites.

Could just have a bit of wax build up.....my vet said that olive oil is quite good for this.....put a few drops in and massage the base of the ear....then wipe out ear with a tissue......
